One of the most common type of threads are tapered threads which, in the specification and design of fluid systems, can sometimes present a problem. It’s particularly important that tapered threads not be overtightened, which could lead to thread damage and worse, leakage. Rather, tapered threads rely on TFFT or Turns From Finger Tight – that is, the number of full rotations of the fitting recommended after the connection is finger tight. Where the problem lies is in the alignment of these fittings in relation to their required connection orientation. Consider the simple illustration below:
